Basic Descriptions
Nature Walks: take a stroll through a natural area to learn about plants, mushrooms, lichens, wildlife, ecology, natural history, or something else. You get to choose which topic(s) to focus on during the walk (i.e., just plants, just fungi, or everything/anything)
Foraging: bring a foraging basket or bag and come out to learn about and collect edible, medicinal, or utilitarian plants, mushrooms, and other organisms. Your outing can focus on a variety of forageables or be centered on just mushroom foraging, just edible plants, or just medicinal plants, for example.
Bushcraft or Survival Skills: schedule a lesson on a topic or topics of your choice including knot-tying, shelter-building, fire-making, camp safety, water sourcing & purification, campfire cooking including baking (bread, brownies, pies, etc.), or something else you’re interested in. Other things can include cordage-making, ax, knife, and saw skills, basic first aid (splinting broken bones, understanding & assembling first aid kits, and plant medicine for first aid).
Wildlife Tracking: take a walk in a woodland or along the river to learn how to identify tracks and sign that animals leave behind including feeding sign, nests/shelter, prints, scat, and other forms of communication sign.
Wildcrafting: these lessons are designed based on your interests. If you want to learn pine needle basketry, all materials will be provided (unless you want foraging to be a part of your lesson!). Want to learn how to make a wreath for spring or wintertime? Book a class with me and we’ll sustainably gather materials from nature and craft something beautiful together. The possibilities for wildcrafting are endless. Let me know what you want to learn and I’ll teach you!
Carving: lessons will be tailored to your interest and your skill level (beginners to advanced students welcome). Learn to carve a spoon, spatula, ladle, mallet, arrow, fishing reel, or any number of other crafts that come to mind. Let me know what you want to make and we’ll carve it together from start to finish.
Academic: private lessons for folks who want to be schooled in botany, mycology, lichenology, ecology, and related topics. If you have an interest or are personally invested already in Environmental Science or Biology, you will love the academic courses led by Northwest Natura. Your lesson will be tailored to your interest and designed by your instructor to suit you personally. Whether you’re currently in college, or you wish you could take a college-level course without paying for all the higher education, these private lessons will provide you with the information you seek. Location will depend on your topics. Indoor or outdoor locations (or combination) will be determined by you or by the instructor during scheduling.
Seasonal Immersion: this category is for folks who want to schedule multiple (2+) outings focused on topics of your choice (nature walks, bushcraft, wildcrafting, etc.) with a seasonal aspect. A minimum of two courses must be scheduled (maximum of twelve per year). Get outside during any or every part of the year to learn all about phenology (cyclical timing in nature), when/where to go to see target species (specific wildflowers, mushrooms, birds, etc.), or learn how to make fire in the rain vs fire in the dry season. Learn how to make a winter shelter vs a summer shelter, and so much more! The possibilities are endless. Any topic is allowed.
Other (any combination: Select this category if you want to combine any of the above offerings into one outing.
Please note that events and private lesson rates may vary depending on travel-time, level of coaching, and additional materials.
