Saturday February 28th, 2026

12:30pm to ~4:50pm

Northwest Natura Land at Boulder Creek

Maple Falls, WA

Escape into the woods at the end of February and reconnect with nature! In this unique workshop, you’ll learn the timeless skills of fire-making and bread-baking while enjoying crackling fires, good company, and a beautiful PNW mossy woodland next to the Nooksack River at Boulder Creek.

Here’s what you can expect from this class:

Spend the day outdoors learning fire-making techniques and the art of bread-baking in cast iron ovens.

  • Fire Skills Practice and Learning

    • Receive guidance on what to forage for when building a fire in the winter season.

    • Build your own fire without a lighter using foraged materials you collected from the land, rain or shine.

  • Survival Skills

    • Learn how to build an optimal fire for cooking/baking and keeping yourself warm and dry

  • Outdoor Cooking

    • Learn the art of bread-baking outdoors under the guidance of an experienced instructor

    • Participants will be in groups of 2-4, each group has their own firepit

    • Each person in your group plays a significant role in creating bread from scratch.

  • Community & Connection

    • This is a lovely, shared experience of cooking outdoors that’s about more than just the skills.

    • Share stories and savor the fruits of your labor together.

Dietary restrictions: the standard bread recipe has gluten and dairy (dairy optional). If you are gluten free, you are welcome to bring your favorite GF flour and make your own loaf. There’s a slight trick to GF bread outdoors so send me an email nwnatura@gmail.com so we can make sure we have all the right ingredients to go with your flour of choice.

Amenities and Weather:

Campfires (3) and shelters (2) are provided in anticipation of normal PNW February weather. Participants should expect at least a little rain and 40F range ambient temperature away from shelter or fire areas and are encouraged to dress warmly and appropriately for an outdoor workshop. Hot beverages will be provided (cocoa, coffee, tea).

In the case of “harsh weather” like freezing rain, gale-force wind, atmospheric rivers, or flooding, the timing or location of this class is subject to change. In such extreme weather conditions, an alternative location will be sought first, and you will be notified of a location change. If a postponement is necessary, a date change will be proposed and you will have the option to transfer, receive class credit to a different course in the future, or a refund for this course minus website processing fees.

There are no facilities on site. Please use the restroom on your way out if needed and bring your own sanitation kit for going in the woods. The closest restroom is in Maple Falls ~2 miles from Boulder Creek.

  • Dress for the weather

  • Wear sturdy, water-resistant footwear
