A Field Trip for Nature Lovers
Saturday April 11th, 2026
12:30pm to ~4:30pm
Whatcom County (20-40 mins outside of Bellingham, WA)
E.g. as far as Maple Falls, Acme, or as close as Ferndale or Lynden. Trail TBD closer to the event. Seasonal changes determine the trail)
Precise location will be disclosed to registered participants 3-4 days prior to event. Email nwnatura@gmail.com with questions or concerns.
This will be a slow “hike” with minimal elevation gain. Come out to “get your steps in” while learning about flora and fauna from local botanist and naturalist, Jazmen Yoder of Northwest Natura.
This course is focused on how to identify young native trees which inevitably gets us talking about patterns in plant families, admiring minutia, and observing the wildlife sign we may see on young trees such as feeding sign from sapsucker, elk, deer, and beaver.
We’ll be sure to talk about anything and everything we find on the trail if it interests the group - such as mushrooms, lichens, tracks, sign, or other curiosities.
Each thing we ID will be followed up with interesting information beyond how to identify it, but also the connected historical significance, human uses, and ecological roles.
Dress for the weather
Appropriate footwear for location (details will be delivered 3-4 days prior to the event) - e.g. hiking boots.
Snacks and water
Notepad and pen (optional)
Binoculars (optional)
Hand lens (optional; NW Natura has some for borrowing and sells 10x lenses for $5/ea in person via venmo, paypal, or cash)
You will receive a receipt of payment. Registered individuals will receive location details, driving directions, weather forecast details and other info in an event-reminder email 3-4 days prior to the event. Please check your spam folder if you do not receive this email. Reach out if you do not find an email.
