Sensory Workshop: Knowing Plants without Looking

from $40.00

Saturday August 2nd, 2025

1:00pm to ~4:30pm
Whatcom Falls ADA Trail
Bellingham, WA

Come take a walk through the forest to learn more about plants than just their names and visible features. In this course, get to know native plants by their textures and aromas with guidance on how to remember them in your own unique way. This workshop is unique: you’ll be encouraged to have a non-visual experience with each plant you meet.

Have fun with a naturalist who can tell you endless facts about the plants you meet. You can describe textures, aromas, and tastes in as many words as you can. In doing so, you’ll be able to recall names and uses of plants without looking by the end of the day when your instructor will do a recall activity.

In this sensory-focused course we’ll spend the day immersed in deep forest and riparian habitat using an ADA trail to learn from plants through their textures, aromatics, and other effects they have on our senses.

If you are looking for a mental health day this one is designed to be slow-paced and meditative.

If you are vision-impaired, this is a great class to come to. You can access it by public transportation (details below). Jazmen can assist you on the trail if necessary. Inform nwnatura@gmail.com of special needs or requests.

Preparedness:

  1. Dress for the weather

  2. Sandals or good walking shoes

  3. Snacks and water

  4. Scarf or bandana to reduce vision during sensory workshop (optional)

  5. Notebook and Pen (optional)

Bus route:

Catch a direct bus from downtown Bellingham using the Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA)

  • Route 525 (Barkley & Downtown): This bus departs from Bellingham Station, drives down Lakeway, and travels north up Electric Avenue to drop you off right at the park.

  • Route 540 (Sunset & Downtown): This bus also connects downtown to the park, traveling along the WTA Plum Line corridor

The Stop: Exit the bus when the driver alerts you that you have arrived at the Electric Ave at Bloedel Donovan stop

Accessing the Park: The bus stop is positioned right on Electric Avenue immediately adjacent to the park. Once you step off the bus onto the sidewalk, turning into the main driveway entryway will lead you straight into the park grounds.

If you are visually impaired or blind and need more information than this, please let Jazmen know ahead of time at nwnatura@gmail.com

Trail Description:

Flat and wide with the vast majority of the trail being composed of fine, firmly packed crushed gravel. It is highly stable and easily navigable for strollers, joggers, and standard mobility devices.
