PNW Ethnobotany & Foraging

  • Plant identification

  • Traditional uses of non-native and native species

  • Foraging ethics & stewardship practices

  • Mushroom identification

  • Fungi ecology basics

The outing is focused on learning about plants of the Pacific Northwest - how to identify individuals and plant families, the cultural importance of native plants we encounter, the culinary or medicinal potential of spring plants and mushrooms, and the ecology of fungi and your other favorite wild edibles. There will be opportunities to forage some of the plants we find.

We will also cover poisonous species to be aware of. 

What to bring:

  • Dress for the weather

  • Comfortable hiking shoes

  • Foraging basket or bag(s)

  • Pruning shears or pocketknife (knives available to borrow if needed)

  • Notebook and pen (optional)

  • Snacks and water

An email reminder will be sent to you a few days prior to the event with an updated list of what to bring with you, the weather forecast, and driving directions.
