Learn and practice several key skills every camping and outdoor enthusiast should know:
What your priorities are in a survival situation
Practice shelter-building (demo)
Practice fire-making w/o a lighter
Learn about water sources & sanitation
Learn how to identify common wild edibles
Practice tying several useful knots
Practice harvesting plant fiber to make cordage (split stick)
Practice gathering materials to cook without pots/stoves
Knife and ax skills
First aid kits - what you may want to carry, and how to use splints and tourniquets.
Cooking techniques without pots or stoves (roast NW salmon filets and other treats provided by your instructor. Your own foraged finds can be included in the cookout).
We will practice all of these skills together in this full-day course.
Northwest Natura provides day-use materials including:
Morakniv bushcraft knives
Ferrocerium rods & strikers
Fire resources (wood, tinder)
Saws (limited number)
Axes (limited number)
Tarps, paracord, and other shelter supplies
Demo equipment; examples of several kit items
First aid materials and equipment including bandages, tourniquets, & splints
Salmon filets x2 + other treats TBA
A list of basic things for you to bring to this course will be provided in an email 3-4 days before the event.
You are encouraged to bring your own outdoor tools such as a knife, ax, fire starter, tarp, containers (pots, water bottles), paracord, first aid kit, etc. so you can practice with your kit and/or I can answer any questions about your gear and help you with new-to-you equipment in our spare time.
This class is designed for adults (16+) who are interested in boosting their confidence outdoors and self-reliance skills.
This course will (most likely) take place on NWN land near Maple Falls off Highway 542 near Boulder Creek but the course might be moved elsewhere based on burn bans or dry season conditions.
