Bushcraft Basics: Survival Fishing Reel
Sunday November 23rd, 2025
1:00pm to 7:00pm
Details and driving directions will be sent to registered participants 3-5 days prior to the event.
Location: This course aims to take place outdoors at Boulder Creek near Maple Falls on private land (maps: Northwest Natura).
Weather: A campfire and shelter will be provided in anticipation of normal PNW November weather. Please expect a little rain and 40F range ambient temperature away from shelter or fire areas. Dress warmly and appropriately. Hot beverages will also be provided (cocoa, coffee, tea).
In the case of “harsh weather” like freezing rain, gale-force wind, or flooding, the timing or location of this class is subject to change. In such extreme weather conditions, an alternative location will be sought first, and you will be notified of a location change. If a postponement occurs and a date change is proposed you will have the option to transfer, receive class credit to a different course in the future, or a refund for this course minus website processing fees.
The skills we will cover in this outdoor workshop include:
An Introduction to Bushcraft in the Pacific Northwest
Survival priorities
Plant ID basics for harvesting wood for hand reels and rods
Several carving techniques
Craft your own survival fishing reel AKA Hobo Reel from start to finish
Including hollow compartment in your reel to hold weights
Learn knots to secure your monofilament line and braided bank line (handle) on the reel
Practice casting (without bait and hook unless you are licensed to fish at the Nooksack River)
We will practice all of these skills together in this full-day course.
Northwest Natura is providing materials including:
Morakniv 511 and Companion knives for day-use
Raw materials for your kit
Black bank line
12lb monofilament fishing line
Sinkers and hooks
Saws and axes for day-use (limited supply)
A list of basic things for you to bring to this course will be provided in an email 3-4 days before the event.

Items such as a sharp carving knife (like Morakniv 106), hatchet, folding hand saw, lighter or heavier fishing line (I am providing 12lb line), bank line in your favorite color (I am providing black), and your own special hooks and lures to deck out your kit.
