Autumnal Wildcrafting: Natural Dyes

from $60.00

Please join naturalist and botanist, Jazmen Yoder for a day of foraging and crafting in this indoor/outdoor workshop.

This course will focus on teaching you how to dye wool with nature’s offerings. *Pre-treated wool sheets will be provided to all participants to use in the dyeing portion of this workshop.

*Pre-treatment steps will be discussed at length during our lesson so that everyone knows exactly how to treat fabric before using natural dye in the future.

This is a “trial course”, meaning, it is the first time this topic has been taught by Northwest Natura. So, class size will be limited to 6 people and the cost of attending is reduced by ~50% of what it may cost in the future.

WHEN

Friday September 26th

1:30pm to ~6:30pm

WHERE

Two locations, one workshop

Outdoor foraging will take place at a location *TBA in Bellingham from 1:30pm-3:30pm.

Indoor Natural Dyes workshop will be held at the Chuckanut Center from 4pm-6pm

*Registered participants will receive an email 2-4 days prior to the event with details on meeting location, weather, and other pertinent details. This outdoor location will be determined closer to the date to ensure specific mushrooms and/or plants and lichens are available and abundant on the day of the workshop.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This workshop, if it sells out, will have no more than 7 people in attendance.

We will meet outside in an area that is easy to access, somewhere within or very close to Bellingham, WA. You will find out where in an email reminder sent closer to the date (see notes above)

During the first portion of this course, we’ll spend some time in the woods looking for plants, mushrooms, and lichen that can be used to make natural dyes. We will forage one or two species while we’re out, and take the materials to our next meeting spot.

At the Chuckanut Center, we’ll use the kitchen to craft a natural dye together. Each person will be provided with a nice piece of white 100% wool fabric that has been treated with either Iron or Potassium Aluminum sulphate to best capture the natural dye.

Lastly, you will learn how to make an amulet or small handheld pouch from the dyed fabric. If feasible, we will make them in class. (This part of the class is contingent on logistics and time allotted during this one-day trial course which may in fact need to be a 2-day workshop if done again in the future).

WHAT TO BRING:

  1. Dress for the weather

  2. Comfortable shoes

  3. Snacks/lunch and water

  4. Foraging basket

  5. Scissors or a knife

  6. Your own sewing kit (optional; needles and thread provided)

  7. Notepad and pen (recommended)

Materials Provided

  • Pre-treated wool fabric for each participant

  • Utensils

  • Pots

  • Kitchen amenities

  • Rubber gloves

  • Needle and thread

Class size is limited as this is a trial course.

Registered individuals will receive details on location in an event-reminder email in the week leading up to the event.
