PNW Naturalist Series - Wilderness Skills
This series is designed for adult individuals at any skill level who are interested in ramping up their survival skills while having fun “surviving” outdoors and learning about plants, wildlife, fire craft, foraging, and ethnobotany.
Each class will focus on both wilderness and naturalist skills to deepen your awareness of the natural world and empower you with practical knowledge and confidence in yourself out in PNW late winter conditions.
Lessons in this series:
Basin Cooking
Knot-tying
Emergency First Aid basics
Nature’s First Aid
Survival Challenges
Water purification techniques
Fire making
Nature-immersion: learn plants and wildlife tracks as we move along through this series.
Each class will build on the previous one. For more details, keep reading!
The series will take place outdoors on Northwest Natura Land next to Nooksack River and Boulder Creek near Maple Falls, WA with the potential of exploring other locations near Bellingham.
The following workshop “day” descriptions are subject to being shuffled around but here’s what you can basically expect:
Day 1: Ethnobotany, Water Purification, and Cooking Skills
Sunday March 1st, 2026
12:00pm to ~4:30pm
Participants will learn basic fire-building skills, how to purify water and cook using stones and a basin, and practice coniferous tree ID. We will also learn medicinal benefits of evergreen plants (trees and shrubs) common to our area and how to use them in the wild.
Day 2: Knot-tying, Nature’s First Aid, and Natural Insect Repellents
Sunday March 7th, 2026
12:00pm to ~4:30pm
Participants will learn and practice at least 4 essential knots, and the basics of emergency shelter-building. We’ll go on a medicinal plant walk and craft a first aid salve that each person can take home or add to their first aid kit. Finally, we’ll create natural insect repellents together (a super helpful skill to have for upcoming spring and summer time!)
Day 3: Emergency First Aid Basics, Wildlife Tracking, and Spring Edibles
Saturday April 12th, 2026
12pm to ~5pm
Participants will learn emergency first aid for outdoor scenarios including treating cuts, sprains, and exposure. We will simulate minor injuries and students will practice their response. In the final half of our last day together we’ll go for a walk by the river to identify wildlife track & sign, and identify and taste spring edibles.

Amenities and Weather: Campfire(s) and shelters to work under are provided in anticipation of normal PNW January weather. Participants should expect at least a little rain and 40F range ambient temperature away from shelter or fire areas and are encouraged to dress warmly and appropriately for an outdoor bushcrafter’s workshop. Hot beverages will also be provided (cocoa, coffee, tea). There are no restroom facilities on Northwest Natura Land - please use the restroom on your way to class if needed and bring your own sanitation kit for go-ing in the woods (i.e. shovel, TP, hand sani).
In the case of “harsh weather” like freezing rain, gale-force wind, or flooding, the timing or location of this class is subject to change. In such extreme weather conditions, an alternative location will be sought first (indoors), and you will be notified of a location change. If a postponement occurs and a date change is proposed you will have the option to transfer, receive class credit to a different course in the future, or a refund for this course minus website processing fees.
