Plant ID & Naturalist Walk on Sumas Mountain

from $35.00

Friday July 10th, 2026

12:30pm to ~4:30pm

Location: Sealund Drive - Sumas Mountain - Everson, WA
on 40 acres private forestland on historical property with landowner present.

Take an educational walk on private forest land located on Sumas Mountain near Everson, WA with local naturalist, Jazmen Yoder.

In this course you will learn:

  • Native plant identification (plants of the PNW)

  • Bird song identification

  • The many uses of various native plants and mushrooms as we find them

  • The seasonality of edible and/or medicinal plants and when to harvest different parts.

  • How to harvest and how to process them into medicine or food

  • Native plant stewardship, foraging ethics, safety, and laws.

You will be amazed at how much we find and how much you’ll learn on this field trip!

————————————

This course is for folks interested in native plant ID, ethnobotany (the study of how indigenous peoples use native plants), herbal medicine, survival skills, bushcraft, and foraging. While this field trip is not designed as a foraging class, it will be a fun educational walk for beginner, intermediate, and advanced foragers, herbalists, and people interested in nature, especially botany, ecology, and PNW plants.

Expect a bit of walking, some uphill, some downhill, and pausing on foot for about 5 minutes at a time. We’ll mostly be in the forest/in the shade.

We will meet near our cars next to a 130-year-old cabin located on the edge of an orchard. We’ll do introductions there before setting off on a native plant walk in the forest.
