Wildcrafter's Workshop: Wild Ivy Basketry
Sunday September 13th, 2026
12:30pm to ~6:00pm
Bellingham, WA
Please join me for an afternoon in the woods in early autumn to remove ecologically-harmful English Ivy from the woodland and turn those vines into beautiful baskets!
Dabblers, beginners, intermediate, and advanced weavers will enjoy this creative, social gathering.
In this course you will learn:
English Ivy characteristics, growth habit, ecological impact, and dispersal
Ethical harvesting of English Ivy, safety precautions, and land steward tactics
How to process English Ivy for basket weaving material
How to rehydrate dried vines for basket weaving
The twining technique
Information on other forms of basketry.
Please wear warm outdoor clothing. We will be outdoors for the entirety of the workshop.
The length of this class is set for ~5.5hrs. Baskets can be completed during this time frame but it is not guaranteed as each participant will be working at their own pace and may be interested in making a large basket that could take longer. This workshop will teach you what you need to know in order to start and finish your basket on your own in the future.
Registration is open to adults and older teens only (16+)
What to bring:
Dress for the weather
Long sleeves for limb protection while gathering vines.
Close-toed shoes or boots
Snacks and water
Gardening Gloves
Garden shears or pocketknife (knives available for borrowing)
Basket or bag for collecting
Blanket or camping chair (optional)
Hand Warmers (e.g. “Hot Hands” for extra comfort; optional)
Please note: Some individuals may experience allergic reactions to English Ivy sap, which may include swelling, itching, burning, and shortness of breath. We encourage all participants to wear plenty of layers to prevent contact with sap, but contact may not be preventable during the actual weaving process as hand dexterity is inhibited with the use of gloves. Individuals participate at their own risk.
After signing up:
You will receive an automated confirmation of payment. Registered individuals will receive location details, driving directions, weather forecast details and other info in an event-reminder email 3-4 days prior to the event. Please use an active email address to sign up. All communications from NW Natura to you re: this workshop will be sent to the email address on file from your purchase.
