Winter Season Fire-Making Skills
Saturday November 15th, 2025
12:00pm to ~4:30pm
Details and driving directions will be sent to registered participants 3-5 days prior to the event.
Location: This course aims to take place outdoors at Boulder Creek near Maple Falls on private land (maps: Northwest Natura).
Weather: A campfire and shelter will be provided in anticipation of normal PNW November weather. Please expect a little rain and 40F range ambient temperature away from shelter or fire areas. Dress warmly and appropriately. Hot beverages will also be provided (cocoa, coffee, tea).
In the case of “harsh weather” like freezing rain, gale-force wind, or flooding, the timing or location of this class is subject to change. In such extreme weather conditions, an alternative location will be sought first, and you will be notified of a location change. If a postponement occurs and a date change is proposed you will have the option to transfer, receive class credit to a different course in the future, or a refund for this course minus website processing fees.
The skills we will cover in this outdoor workshop include:
Survival Priorities
What to look for when you’re out foraging for firewood
Discover tinder materials, fatwood, and finding dry materials
Practicing intentional and energy-efficient methods for successfully making a fire outdoors without a lighter
How to process natural materials for optimal flammability
Knife and ax skills
Feathersticks
Fire-making basics
Using a ferrocerium rod
Making charcloth for flint & steel
Plant ID will be sprinkled into the lesson
Knowledge of how to process natural materials in order to catch a spark to produce a lifesaving fire, or just a recreational one imparts a closer understanding of the world around us and thus a more intimate connection to the outdoors. After taking this course, your confidence in your ability to make a fire will be just one of the takeaways.
If there is one bushcraft skill to have, it is how to make a fire!
