A three-part series teaching you how to confidently identify wild mushrooms using field guides and dichotomous keys.

Expect Fairhaven, Bellingham, and Deming area as destinations for these courses.

Registered participants will receive an email with details on location 2-4 days before each event.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Introductory lessons in Mycology

    • Mushroom ecology

    • Identification

    • Vocabulary

    • Taxonomy

  • Spore printing

  • Indoor and outdoor lessons

    • How to use a dichotomous key

    • How to use supplementary field guides

    • Field observations and collection for identification

    • How to achieve 100% confidence in your ID

  • You will be encouraged to also collect mushrooms on your own and identify them in class with help from your instructor

  • Meet 3 days this fall with the same group - make friends with other mushroom lovers!

What to bring:

  • Mushrooms Demystified by David Aurora (more or less required for this course) Limited copies available to borrow from Northwest Natura. This book is recommended for all your future mushroom ID quests.

  • Mushrooms of Cascadia by Noah Siegel & Christian Schwarz (optional)

  • Dress for the weather

  • Snacks and water

  • Notepad and pen (optional)

  • Foraging basket

  • Hand lens (a personal hand lens will be provided to each student for them to keep).

Registered individuals will receive location details, driving directions, weather forecast details and other info in an event-reminder email 2-4 days prior to the event.
